Intro
This easy alpine trail on the south side of the Surselva offers much sun and gorgeous views of the surrounding mountains and the valley. It leads through an extraordinary landscape, past several chapels and the picturesque villages of Siat, Ruschein, Ladir and Falera.
Description
This winter hike is a section of the well-known Senda Sursilvana long-distance trail. It begins in Siat and continues via Ruschein and Ladir to Falera. These villages are beautifully situated, high above the valley on the south side of the Surselva. They offer amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the valley. In addition to the must-see churches and chapels, you come across the first architectural gem of the Surselva as soon as you start: In 2010 Restaurant Ustria Steila was built in Siat by architect Gion A. Caminada who is known far beyond the borders of Switzerland.
Past the 12th century church of Sogn Glieci with its mural paintings, the path crosses the Ual da Mulin mountain brook. The village of Ruschein is home to a number of valuable cultural assets. The church hill, for example, was a place of worship and sacrifice as far back as pagan times. The next village on the way is Ladir, which lies in a gently sloping depression. The views here of the middle section of the Surselva region are amazing. Now the trail continues gently uphill for a while, before it descends to the Val da Cafegns. Just a few more turns until the hike ends in Falera. With its patrician homes, Falera has preserved the charm of a typical mountain village in Graubünden. Its landmark is the church of St. Remigius, which is located close to Parc La Mutta, Switzerland’s largest megalith park.
The trail can be completed in either direction with various options to shorten it, because you can return by postbus to Ilanz from Siat, Ruschein, Ladir or Falera. It is a relaxing tour, rated medium to easy, based on fitness level and technical difficulty. It is suitable for the whole family and there are a number of restaurants along the way.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
