Biking over the Albis chain, you reach the Knonau district, farming country, a rural idyll at the gates of the big city. Particularly attractive stretch when long-distance views are good: Alpine ranges of Glarus and Central Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland high Alps.
Description
At the north end of the lake, the city of Zurich attracts guests from around the world to the region. Travelling along the Sihl river, you leave Switzerland’s biggest city heading towards Brunau. Whether joggers, dog-walkers or cyclists, the banks of the Sihl are popular with locals who want to briefly escape the city.
Once you cross the Sihl, the climb up to the Albisgrat ridge begins. You gain around 350 metres of elevation over a dozen bends. During the climb, you can marvel at the jumps by the downhill bikers on the Höcklertrail. You can enjoy a leisurely ride along the ridge, including far-reaching views to Lake Zurich and the Alps beyond. From Restaurant Felsenegg, you descend to Tägerst in Knonaueramt, continuing on the main road to reach the idyllic Türlersee lake just a little later. If you have the time and your bathing suit, you can take a refreshing break here.
Past Aeugst am Albis, Herferswil and Rifferswil, the beautiful mountain landscape appears before you reach the church at Kappel am Albis. It was built between 1250 and 1349 and is now a seminar hotel and house of education of the Evangelical-Reformed Church of the Canton of Zurich. With stunning views of the city of Zug and Lake Zug beyond as well as the peaks of the Pilatus and Rigi, you pedal the final seven kilometres to Baar, the destination for this stage.
