Intro

Between the emerald green river, Rustici and the Ponte dei Salti lies one of the most pristine valleys in Ticino. You will discover picturesque stone villages, wonderful bathing spots and traditions that shape the charm of the Verzasca Valley.

The Verzasca Valley at a glance

The Verzasca Valley stretches over 25 kilometres north of Lake Maggiore and combines nature with authentic mountain villages such as Lavertezzo and Sonogno. In between are the famous stone bridge Ponte dei Salti and the 220-meter-high Verzasca dam. Rustic stone houses and churches tell of a time when the valley was still secluded.

What to experience

Baden at the Ponte dei Salti

In Lavertezzo you will find historic buildings and crystal clear water. The Roman double-arch bridge Ponte dei Salti spans the Verzasca, whose river basins extend between smoothly polished granite rocks. This is the most popular bathing spot in the valley and a popular photo motif, especially on nice days.

  • Good to know: The current of the Verzasca is unpredictable, pay attention to the signs.
  • Tip: Come early in the morning, then there will be fewer people.

Discovery tour to Sonogno

Sonogno is the furthest village in the Verzasca Valley and has retained its rustic charm with old stone houses and narrow streets. At the village square you will visit the valley museum, which provides information about the former life of the valley inhabitants. In the Casa della Lana, women comb, spin and dye sheep's wool by hand and use it to make blankets, scarves and other things.

  • Good to know: Just behind the village is the Cascate della Froda waterfall.
  • Tip: Sonogno can be easily reached by bus from Locarno train station.

Hiking on the Sentierone Verzasca

The Sentierone Verzasca is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Ticino. The 24-kilometer trail takes you from Sonogno via Lavertezzo to Locarno – through chestnut forests, along the emerald green Verzasca, past rustici, chapels and waterfalls. You can do the Camino in 2 stages.

  • Good to know: On the way, you can cool off in the Verzasca.
  • Tip: Plan a break in Corippo – one of the smallest villages in Switzerland.
