Waldegg Castle
Overview
Intro
Waldegg Castle is rightly considered the most beautiful country manor of the Solothurn patriciate. Here, where ambassadors and the aristocracy once went in and out, visitors can immerse in the same bygone world today - and learn of a time when Solothurn was the seat of the French ambassadors with the aid of a modern, multimedia guide.
From the old town of Solothurn it’s just 30 minutes on foot to the castle Waldegg: A walk that’s well worth it on arriving at the feudal scene - where the final stretch presents an imposing tree-lined avenue leading to the entrance. It was in the 17th century that the powerful Johann Viktor von Beseval gave his orders for the place to be built as a summer residence. The building bears witness to the aristocratic and diplomatic history - and time when Solothurn was the seat of the ambassador to the French king.
Today the castle is a museum - and inside, baroque-furnished salons and massive oil paintings document former, everyday life. And outdoors, baroque-style premises with orange trees and vegetable garden invite you to a leisurely stroll. Thanks to ultra modern multimedia guides, it doesn’t take long to feel transported back through the ages either - to the past world of noble gentry and diplomats.
