The Picture Book Switzerland: A Journey to Fall in Love Zermatt – Bern – Glacier Express – Poschiavo – Bernina Express – Zurich - Swiss Grand Tour
Overview
Zurich: The Swiss love their leisure Switzerland’s largest city is the epitome of calm. The “speed” for which the Zurichers are known in Switzerland is, by German standards, a relaxed calm and inner serenity—which, surprisingly, one soon adopts oneself. Behind Zurich’s famous façades lie surprising stories. Before you go, take one last look at the Alfred Escher Monument. Your journey continues. Bern is unique. Bern is magnificent. Bern is wonderful. Is that why the city represents Switzerland abroad as its capital? Very likely! The heart of Bern is its wonderful Old Town with its six-kilometer-long arcades, under which visitors stroll protected from rain and sun. Alongside these unique arcades, the Zytglogge (Clock Tower), the Münster Cathedral, the Federal Palace, and the largely preserved sandstone façades shape the image of the city founded in 1191. And because Bern was built on a peninsula, everything is close together and easily accessible on foot. Discover Bern and its UNESCO World Heritage from its most beautiful side! Contrasts, like nowhere else. Past Lake Thun and through the wild and romantic Kander Valley, you arrive in Zermatt at the foot of the world-famous Matterhorn. There is much to discover here. Switzerland as if from a picture book. How about an excursion to the Klein Matterhorn or Gornergrat? The Glacier Express swallowed by the mountain The absolute highlight is the train journey on the famous Glacier Express. It’s a day trip through pristine Alpine landscapes, home to Heidi and Peter the Goatherd. Along the way, the train is often swallowed by the mountain. But shortly afterward, the mountain releases its “prey.” Apparently, it’s not to its taste. The tunnels act like flaps in nature. You’ll have fantastic views of majestic snow-capped peaks, deep gorges, roaring waterfalls, and deep-blue glaciers. All of this is the picture-book Switzerland. Which Alpine crossings could be considered the most spectacular, craziest, and unfortunately also the saddest? The craziest and saddest are those of Hannibal and Suvorov. Both were military campaigns. They aimed to attack the enemy from behind. The most spectacular Alpine crossing of modern times is the train journey over the Bernina Pass. A ride on the Bernina Express over the UNESCO route is therefore also included. It is probably the most comfortable and equally bold Alpine crossing from the cold north to the warm south. Experience the beautiful Poschiavo Valley: A touch of the south—just before Italy Protected historic towns and outstanding landscapes await your discovery. With its picturesque old town, narrow alleys, and beautiful, well-preserved patrician houses, Poschiavo enchants its guests. Worth seeing are the Palazzo Albrici a la Poste, the Church of San Vittore Mauro, and the villas in the Spaniol Quarter. Nestled beautifully between the mountains lies the emerald-green Lake Poschiavo. In less than two hours, you can take a walk (just under 7 km) around the lake without any noticeable change in altitude. This walk takes you along the Bernina Railway on one side and deep into nature on the other. The Brusio Circular Viaduct is sure to appear in many travel brochures. Elegantly, the structure winds 360 degrees, extending the route to manage the altitude difference in the narrow Valposchiavo. Swiss luxury panoramic trains Only the train traveler enjoys relaxed, breathtaking views and legendary vistas—a memorable journey full of variety, fascination, and above all, comfort. Along the way, this trip will first leave you speechless, but then you’ll certainly become an enthusiastic storyteller.
