Inleiding
The Eigenthal valley lies at the northern foot of the Pilatus, not quite 15 kilometres south-west of Lucerne. Its popularity in winter is due to two factors: it is generally fog-free, and it boasts cross-country skiing trails.
Beschrijving
The PostBus from Lucerne’s railway station to the Eigenthal takes no more than half-an-hour. The valley is a popular destination thanks to its proximity to the city and conurbation of Lucerne. It takes the shape of a 7.5 km long semicircle, with the Trochenmattegg at the open end and the Meienstoss at the closed end. Its southern slopes are formed by the steep, rugged limestone flanks of the Pilatus chain.
The Eigenthal in winter is largely free of low-lying cloud and features numerous cross-country skiing trails. The skiing centre and start point of the standard trail are some 200 metres’ walk from the PostBus terminus. The trail starts by ascending slightly along the left-hand side of the valley as it makes its way towards Buechstäg. The views on this leg are of the majestic Pilatus chain.
A short descent marks the point where the trail turns, after which comes a gently slanting section as it heads back out towards Meienstoss. There is a good place for taking a breather in the middle of the open moorland, before the trail starts a gentle ascent back to the start point. The Lindenstübli Restaurant is immediately adjacent to the trail – perfect for gathering strength before attempting another circuit.
De sleutel voor een prettige wandeltocht is onder andere een zorgvuldige planning. Win op voorhand inlichtingen in bij de plaatselijke informatiedienst over de toestand van het traject en de weersomstandigheden. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de weersomstandigheden kan de route gesloten of onderbroken zijn.
