A winter wonderland to avoid crowds: On the way to the Susten Pass, the village of Gadmen tempts visitors with its guaranteed snow cover and a quiet cross-country skiing trail that’s never short of sunshine. It follows the Gadmen river and offers panoramic views of Mount Titlis and the Fünffingerstöck.

Gadmen is a real insider’s tip for any Nordic skiing fans wanting to escape the busy tourist areas in the Bernese Highlands. The village in the east of the Bern Canton is on the road to the Susten Pass, at the foot of the rugged Gadmerfluh mountainside. People often go past it without giving it a second glance. A big mistake – the peace and quiet, the vast mountain backdrop and its sunny location make it a particularly enjoyable place for cross-country skiing.
The loops of the Gadmen cross-country skiing trail go in towards the valley and upwards out of it, into the mountain landscape. The circuit consistently follows the path of the Gadmen river. This tributary of the Aare river starts on the northern slope of Giglistock mountain, and it has other major tributaries joining it, such as the Steinwasser from the Stein Glacier and Wenden Glacier. To begin with, the trail goes slightly downhill to the turning point by the Fuhren power station. Travelling along the edge of the forest, you arrive at the large alpine flood plain of Chalberweid. On the wooded, shaded side of the trail there are a few downhill “schuss” passages. The mountain backdrop that appears is extremely impressive, allowing you to see from Mount Titlis all the way to the Fünffingerstöcken mountains to the north of the Susten Pass Road.
You then travel through Obermad and back to the centre of the village, with the most beautiful scenery surrounding you. The trail’s exits and start points can be found in Gadmen, Obermad and Fuhren.
De sleutel voor een prettige wandeltocht is onder andere een zorgvuldige planning. Win op voorhand inlichtingen in bij de plaatselijke informatiedienst over de toestand van het traject en de weersomstandigheden. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de weersomstandigheden kan de route gesloten of onderbroken zijn.
