Inleiding
In de zwarte aarde van Seeland groeien lange rijen groenten in alle tinten groen en dompelen eenden en meerkoeten zich onder in de idyllische Wohlensee. In Bern klinkt het muzikale mechanisme van de Zytglogge-toren en zitten de mensen vrolijk aan kleine tafeltjes op de Bärenplatz.

In Neuchâtel, the place to be is down on the beach. The university, art museum, ice rink, football stadium and swimming baths stand proud among buildings from the Belle Époque. Once upon a time, the great writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990) would gaze out of his home, which is now the Centre Dürrenmatt Neuchâtel (CDN), and down to the lake and what was then the stadium. Heading along the lake shore, you will soon encounter the Laténium, Switzerland’s biggest archaeology museum.
Picnic spots are as numerous here as the grains of sand, to say nothing of the villas with resplendent gardens and new-build developments. The Chasseral mountain greets you from afar. Known as the king of the Jura mountains, this peak often remains covered with snow in spring, after the landscape below has turned green. After crossing the Zihlbrücke bridge and Seebodenkanal, you will find yourself in the new, equally green world of the Gampelenmoos or Grand Marais, one of the most important vegetable-growing regions in Switzerland. Ins is the village where Albert Anker once produced his artworks. The Centre Albert Anker, located in the house where he was born, is in the heart of the village and is open to visitors.
Your journey will take you through Seeland via the “Gemüselehrpfad” (“Vegetable Learning Path”). From Ins to Kerzers, information boards explain the various types of vegetable crops. At Papiliorama in Kerzers, you can admire over 1,000 different species of butterflies and moths; next door, Nocturama houses nocturnal creatures such as armadillos, bats, spectacled owls, night monkeys and kinkajous. But you still have around 25 kilometres ahead of you. In the Niederried-Oltigenmatt nature conservation area, the landscape between Aare and Saanesteig seems secluded. The two rivers are lined with ponds and fens featuring an amphibian spawning site of national importance.
The bridge over the river Saane is a real cycling hotspot, where you will encounter bike enthusiasts from all over the world. Handy too, if you need a hand pushing your bike along the steep bridge. In winter 2019, Mühleberg became the first nuclear power plant in Switzerland to be shut down. You will then pass Lake Wohlen, a hydroelectric power station, toad crossings, a bridge over a tufa chasm and beautiful patches of woodland. A little further on, you will encounter the river Biber and, from the Wohleibrücke bridge, swans drifting across the enchanting swan lake – what a way to round off this leg of the journey! For the final stretch, there is another short downhill section in the Bremgartenwald wood and past the Glasbrunnen fountain into resplendent, laid-back Bern.

Win op voorhand inlichtingen in bij de plaatselijke informatiedienst over de toestand van het traject en de weersomstandigheden. Afhankelijk van het seizoen en de weersomstandigheden kan de route gesloten of onderbroken zijn.
