Juice, 2010
Most of Viviane Sassen’s projects are carried out in Africa, where the photographer spent part of her childhood. The boundaries between photographic assignments – such as picture spreads for fashion magazines – and freelance artistic works intermingle and inspire each other. Using stark shadows and scenic intrusions, she hopes to anonymise the protagonists and thus shield them from the viewers’ direct gaze.
