Seated Harlequin
In 1923, Pablo Picasso painted four portraits of a seated harlequin. The Catalan painter Jacinto Salvadó sat as the model for this group of pictures, dressed as a harlequin in a costume owned by Picasso. Picasso turns his attention here to a subject that interested him for many years. He used to pay frequent visits to the circus and spent his early life in the same milieu as the artistes. He felt an allegiance with these figures on the margins of bourgeois society, and he painted circus people as they went about their everyday lives.
