Introdução

With a network of cross-country trails totalling over 220km, the Vallée de Joux is one of the largest cross-country skiing areas in Central Europe. This is where Nordic walking fans get their reward: the trails meander seemingly endlessly in gentle ups and downs through forests and clearings.

In January 2020, the stars of the future competed for medals here at the Winter Youth Olympic Games. Small wonder, after all, the hills along the Vallée de Joux are an Eldorado for cross-country skiers. In winter it feels like you could almost be in the far north here. Forests covered in deep snow, known for their century-old spruces, dominate the landscape. The trails wind their way through the area for kilometres. There is a good chance that you will not meet a soul for long periods of time.

Depending on your mood, stamina and time available, you can lengthen or shorten your route as you please. If you’re planning a longer outing, pack a picnic. The trails pass several unattended huts, where you can rest a while in preparation for the next few kilometres. The Apollo hut is particularly lovely. These forest huts once provided shelter for loggers. These days they are locations for spontaneous encounters or cosy resting places.

In terms of variety, the trails in the Vallée de Joux have something for almost every taste: sometimes the going is quite gentle, other bends demand technical skills and at times a demanding ascent makes your pulse race. Its good to know that there are several restaurants serving hearty local dishes in the nearby village of Le Sentier.
