Introdução
A New Lease on Life for Guy Kummer-Nicolussi’s “Guitares Valaisannes” in Sion
Sion-based composer Guy Kummer-Nicolussi continues to surprise the cultural scene in French-speaking Switzerland. Following his remarkable return in 2025 with a work for cello, viola, and guitar, “Trio In Extremis,” this fall he is presenting a completely reimagined version of his masterpiece, “Guitares Valaisannes,” on the stage of the “Émotions Musicales” association. The audience is set to rediscover this major work, recorded in 2009 following a long compositional period spanning from 1996 to 2008. Described by its composer as the “silk ribbon” of his creative life, the work draws its roots from the heritage of Valais while embracing Asian influences. For this new tour, the original repertoire of 20 pieces is elevated by the collaboration of a quintet of virtuosos from French-speaking Switzerland, comprising Pascal Reichler, Mathieu Constantin, Grégory Scalésia, Christian Tille, and Jean-Yves Zufferey. This intimate ensemble brings a unique polyphonic clarity to the compositions. The textures of the classical guitar are expressed with an ideal intimacy for the intimate acoustics of Émotions Musicales, bringing iconic pieces to life—from the atmospheric landscapes of *The Black Valley* to the rhythmic subtleties of a reimagined bolero. This new, revised, and expanded version will delight both enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. This exceptional concert will not only showcase the musical heritage of Valais but also offer the audience moments of shared experience of rare intensity.
