Introdução

In the program LACRIMÆ, Martina Joos (recorders) and Martin Zimmermann (harpsichord) combine tears - transformed into sound - full of pain and longing with the joyful and intoxicating side of music.

The musical depiction of lament, grief, and melancholy - described by terms such as Lacrimae, Lamentatio, triste, mesto, or plaintif - is one of the central forms of expression in European music between the late 15th and 18th centuries. While a stronger focus on the musical expression of emotion had already begun to develop during the Renaissance, it was systematically refined during the Baroque period. The LACRIMÆ motif brings together aesthetic, rhetorical, and compositional developments and exemplifies the connection between music and emotion.

The foundation of this development is the close connection between music and rhetoric, as shaped by humanism. Composers deliberately employed musical means not only to accompany grief and pain but also to give them audible form. Textual expression gained prominence over contrapuntal rigor, allowing lament to be experienced through a musically structured form. Characteristic features include chromatically descending lines as symbols of pain and decline, or lament bass lines that express inevitability and enduring suffering. Rhetorical figures such as sighs or sudden interval leaps intensify the emotional impact; added to these are dissonances, delayed resolutions, slow tempos, and irregular phrasing, which convey tension, melancholy, and inner turmoil.

In the 17th century, musical lamentation became even more refined. Sonata movements emerged that conveyed clear emotions even without text. Terms such as “triste,” “mesto,” “plaintif,” or “lacrimae” referred not only to moods but also to musical conventions, such as the descending second as a symbol of a tear.

Musical lament thus evolved into a complex system of expression that closely intertwines music, text, and rhetoric. Continuously refined since the Renaissance, it reached its greatest expressive power during the Baroque period and became a key phenomenon in musical aesthetics.
