Artists Peter Fischli and Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg in conversation.
Working with David Weiss as artist duo Fischli/Weiss, Peter Fischli initially conceivedGarten (Garden)in 1997 in the context of Skulptur Projekte in Münster – an artwork designed as an everyday cottage and kitchen garden, blurring the boundaries between nature, design and daily life. From spring 2027,Garten (Garden)will be on view at the Fondation Beyeler. Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg works at the interface between art, design, biotechnology and ecology. Her workPollinator Pathmaker(2021–) challenges the anthropocentric design of gardens and landscapes.
Against the backdrop of these two artistic positions, the garden will be taken as a starting point for inquiries into human and non-human perception, care and control, as well as the possibilities of developing different forms of coexistence. The conversation will explore what it means to root oneself in a place, to work with what is already there, and to harness gardening practices to create the conditions for other forms of life.
Moderated by Rahel Kesselring, Botanical Curator, the conversation marks the beginning of an in-depth engagement with botanical themes at the Fondation Beyeler. With its new Botanical Programme, the Fondation Beyeler turns its attention to the plant life and the parkland surrounding its expanded ensemble, opening new perspectives on the relationship between art, nature and different forms of life.
Rootingforms the first chapter of the Fondation Beyeler’s Botanical Programme and explores the ways ecological questions can be embedded in concrete places, institutions and existing forms of knowledge – with particular regard to the history, care and ecology of the Fondation Beyeler’s park landscape.
The conversation will be conducted in English.
