The exhibition, entitled ‘Posters, what a passion! A collection of collections’, aims to highlight the importance of the Chiasso Cultural Centre’s collection, which has been enriched thanks to generous donations of posters over the last fifteen years. These include thematic collections forming part of the archives of graphic designers such as Heinz Waibl, Orio Galli, as well as significant collections of posters donated by Bruno Monguzzi (Swiss Design Grand Prix 2025) and Lora Lamm (Swiss Design Grand Prix 2015), and donations from private art enthusiasts, comprising both small and large collections of posters.
The exhibition is dedicated to the poster, as a graphic work and a unique form of expression, owing to its ability to convey concepts and emotions through the evocative and concise language of images, colours and the compositional relationship between large blocks of colour and lettering. The poster was, in fact, a defining feature of communication in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and even today – albeit through the multifaceted forms of digital media – it remains a part of our daily lives on the streets, on public transport and in large urban spaces.
In total, around eighty posters are on display in the museum’s galleries, arranged in a minimalist setting according to a thematic and chronological framework that traces the birth and development of advertising, its evolution into product promotion through corporate graphics, then the promotion of cultural events and exhibitions, right through to major advertising campaigns in which the poster serves as the medium for conveying the entire corporate identity or corporate image.
The exhibition presents a selection of works that invite reflection on the creative journey and schools of thought of renowned graphic designers and photographers, and brings to a close the Chiasso Cultural Centre’s exhibition season dedicated to pulchritudo. The posters on display in thegalleries of the m.a.x. museum trace the work of important artists, such as Gabriele Chiattone, Emil Cardinaux, Xanti Schawinsky, Lora Lamm, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Willi Rieser, Herbert Leupin, Romano Chicherio, Niklaus Troxler, Orio Galli, Armin Vogt, Sigfried Odermat & Tissi, Richard Feurer, Heinz Waibl, Daniele Garbarino, Armando Losa, Antonio Tabet, Lulo Tognola, Alexander Troehler, Gregory Vines, Jörg Hamburger and Georg Stähelin, Werner Jeker, René Gauch, Roger Pfund and Bruno Monguzzi, to name but a few in the order in which they appear in the exhibition.
Starting with early 20th-century chromolithography, the exhibition also highlights the emergence of the ‘Swiss Style’, with its compositional rigour and geometric lettering, progressing through to offset and then digital printing. The exhibition extends to the dawn of the postmodern era, when photography and photomontages transformed the paradigm of visual communication.
