Samoubiytsa - Vaudeville soviétique
Visão geral
Introdução
The Companions of the Arts
Non-subscription performanceThe plot begins with a late-night argument: Semyon Semyonovich Podsekalnikov, unemployed and destitute, wakes his wife, Maria Lukyanovna, to ask her for some liver sausage. Semyon leaves the apartment, hinting that he might commit suicide. What follows is a series of absurd and humorous situations in which the characters reveal—often unwittingly—truths about the meaning and weight of existence. Rumors of this imagined suicide spread rapidly, drawing in a cast of characters representing oppressed social classes and ideologies. Everyone seeks to claim Semion’s fate as their own: “In this day and age, people who want to die have no plan, and people who have a plan don’t want to die. Today more than ever, we need ideological martyrs.” Through his potential suicide, he discovers an existential and social legitimacy… but the closer the deadline for his suicide draws, the more reasons he finds to love life and not to die!The play blends tragic and comic elements to depict Soviet society in the late 1920s. Through the power of laughter, the contemporary audience hears the political satire but is first and foremost moved by a philosophical truth: “any way you can, just live.”
