Between the Plains and the Mountains: The Ritual of Cremation in Roman Times in Valais
The practice of cremation involves various stages, each of which leaves specific traces visible to the trained eye of an archaeologist. In Valais, several practices appear to have coexisted throughout the Roman period, reflecting the many possible combinations at each stage of the cremation process. Through a multidisciplinary study of several small Roman necropolises (Ardon, Lens, Randogne-Bluche, Salgesch, and Randa), it will be possible to highlight the regional and chronological evolution of this funerary ritual.
