Vêpres musicales – Martin Schmid SJ : la musique au croisement des cultures

Musical Vespers – Martin Schmid, S.J.: Music at the Crossroads of Cultures

On Friday, October 16, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., the Cordeliers Church in Fribourg will host a musical vespers service dedicated to the legacy of the Swiss Jesuit, missionary, and composer Martin Schmid, S.J. (1694–1772), as part of Universal Mission Month.

In the 18th century, Martin Schmid worked among the Chiquitos in what is now Bolivia, where music became a privileged means of cultural exchange. His compositions bear witness to a remarkable dialogue between the European Baroque tradition and local musical cultures.

At the initiative of Missio Suisse, the Ensemble baroque du Léman will bring this musical legacy to life under the direction of Thierry Dagon. Soloists Joëlle Delley Zhao, Benoît Volkart, Bo Zhao, and Fabrice Hayoz will be accompanied by Philippe Despont on the organ.

An evening where Baroque music and spirituality come together, inviting the audience to discover an exceptional musical heritage that transcends borders and centuries.
