Introdução

Sechseläutenplatz, located between Bellevue and the Zurich Opera House, combines tradition and modernity and is a place of relaxation. Here, young and old alike walk, sit and play on the square, which covers an area of 16,000 square metres and is made of Vals quartzite. The many trees, places to sit and water elements lend it an urban cosiness.

Zurich’s most popular festival square right by Lake Zurich plays host to the “Sechseläuten” spring festival every year. This is when the “Böögg” – an artificial snowman effigy that is placed on a pyre – is burned as a way of saying goodbye to winter and welcoming in the summer. The annual performances of the National Circus Knie and a Christmas market also take place here.

This square where you see people strolling about today used to be under water. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that the shore where Sechseläutenplatz is now was raised to be above the water. During the Second World War, this area was turned into a potato field and a rapeseed field. Finally, it was transformed into a city park.
