1912/13 reist Karl Bickel nach Italien. Unterwegs richtet sich sein Blick auf Architektur, Räume und ihre Strukturen; in Carrara wagt er sich erstmals an den Stein.

Diese Annäherung bleibt gezwungenermassen kurz und fragmentarisch – und wirkt dennoch über Jahrzehnte nach. Die Ausstellung eröffnet neue, bislang wenig bekannte Einblicke in diese prägende Zeit und zeigt, wie sich Bickels Italienerfahrung in seinem späteren Schaffen fortsetzt – im Paxmal, in seinen Marmorarbeiten und darüber hinaus.
