Saas-Fee: Hiking through the larch forest

The Wildi part of the village of Saas-Fee is the start of a leisurely hike through the autumnal Saas Valley. The hike takes you along a small forest path, across the hamlet of Sengg to the “Bear Trap”, through the magical larch forest and back to the village, then on to Staffelwald. In September, hikers will often come across curious and trusting marmots there. The little creatures enjoy being fed carrots and peanuts. The hike continues on uphill in the direction of the glacier lake, getting as far as the Gletschergrotte mountain restaurant. Once fortified by a traditional Valais take on cheese on toast, the descent to the Felskinn valley station is a breeze.

The Fee Gorge winds from Saas-Fee down to Saas-Grund. Under the watchful eye of a mountain guide, adventurous souls make their way through the impressive alpine landscape. The tour takes you past waterfalls and across suspension bridges. Some climbing ability is required in order to traverse steel cables and ladders along the way. But the real highlights of the trip are the zip line and an aerial cableway. The scope of the tour can be tailored to each group and takes two and a half to four hours, depending on the route chosen. It’ll be thrills and spills all the way until you finally arrive in Saas-Grund down below.

The world’s highest underground train has been taking passengers up to the Mittelallalin (3,500 metres above sea level) for the past 30 years. Up here, you can also find one of the largest ice grottos in the world: the Ice Pavilion is well worth a visit! The Allalin rotating restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy the breathtaking views. Delicious meals and a vast mountain panorama including 4,000m peaks round off the trip up to the Mittelallalin.

Saas-Fee: Hotel Tenne

The three-star Hotel Tenne is particularly family-friendly and enjoys a central location. The restaurant offers an impressive range of different specialities all year round. The mountain railway is just ten minutes from the hotel, and the bus terminal just five minutes away. The hotel also has its own outdoor pit-pat course – a game somewhere between billiards and minigolf that is played on tables – as well as a children’s playground, both of which can be found right nearby.
