Intro

Even small towns have a lot to offer. The historical town of Klingnau is home to many a fine wine grown in the vineyards on the far side of the old town, while its reservoir and nature reserve attract guests from around the world every year.

Description

Klingnau is one of the few old towns whose charter – a barter agreement dated 26 December 1239 – still exists to this day. Klingnau is entered in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of National Importance. The medieval old town is located on the crest of a hill and consists of two rows of houses closely built together and arranged around a central square in an oval shape. In the heart of the square is the municipal church.

On the tour you’ll learn many interesting facts about the founding of the city, its transition from the Middle Ages through to the modern era and its various historical buildings. Klingnau Reservoir is an internationally renowned paradise for birds as well as an energy store for its hydroelectric power plant. Visitors can take a tour of the reservoir and find out how the power plant was built, what the landscape used to look like and what makes the reservoir so unique. In the Middle Ages, the majority of people in Klingnau were employed in winegrowing. On a tour of the vineyards, guides will explain what this involved, what winegrowing means today and how the wine is produced.
