In the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau you will find the largest public collection of Swiss art. This is presented in halls by the architects Herzog & de Meuron. Use a tablet to bring paintings to life.
The Aargauer Kunsthaus – Art Museum at a glance
With over 21,000 works, the Aargauer Kunsthaus owns the most comprehensive public collection of Swiss art from the 18th century to the present day. The focal points include Caspar Wolf, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Ferdinand Hodler and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. In addition to the collection, there are changing exhibitions of current Swiss art.
What to experience
Visit the Swiss Art Collection (1–2 hours)
On your tour, you will discover Swiss art from over 200 years, from Caspar Wolf's mountain paintings to young artists from the region. Because the presentation is regularly reassembled, you will encounter different works and unfamiliar neighborhoods between old and new every time you visit.
- Tip: On Thursday between 5 and 8 p.m. you can visit the Kunsthaus for free.
Bring images to life (1-2 hours)
At the ticket office, you can borrow a tablet for your family and embark on the "Magic Window" tour. In front of selected paintings, augmented reality transforms the still images into moving scenes. This makes a visit to the museum an exciting journey of discovery through the collection for your children.
- Good to know: You can borrow the tablet free of charge by submitting an ID.
- Tip: Take your children to the studios where you can get creative yourself.
Walk through the architecture of Herzog & de Meuron
Two sweeping spiral staircases lead you from the open foyer to the upper halls. The Basel-based architectural firm connected the old building with an extension whose roof gently directs daylight into the rooms. In the halls, architecture recedes and leaves the stage to art.
- Tip: Take a break at Café basil in the foyer between tours.
