Archiving the Universe
Overview
Intro
Stefan Klein’s exhibition combines photograms, sound, and spiritual insights, offering new perspectives on transience and connectedness during the period between All Saints’ Day and Eternity Sunday.
In *Archiving the Universe*, Stefan Klein examines dust in all its multifaceted dimensions as a fundamental component of the universe and of life. The project opens up perspectives on the ambivalence of human existence, on life from theological and philosophical viewpoints, and, quite concretely, on one’s own experience: Dust is everywhere and reflects, in the microcosm, the complexity of the macrocosm.
This opens up a spiritual horizon, particularly regarding the question of remembrance. The exhibition’s timing—between the Catholic feast days of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and the Protestant “Sunday of the Dead and Eternity”—takes up this connection.
The series *Archiving the Universe* combines various artistic elements. Photograms depict dust that has accumulated at different moments. At first glance, they resemble cartographies of the universe; in fact, they show tiny particles in detail. In this way, they allude to the idea that all matter consists of the same substance, becomes the same substance, and is thus interconnected.
Added to this is the sound installation *Recordings on Dust* by Ben Glas and Stefan Klein. Just as dust can linger in the air for a long time, the sound also floats through the space, connecting the individual elements of the exhibition. On selected occasions, the organ enters into a live dialogue with the sound installation.
The project was realized in cooperation with WÄCKER&GRAUPNER, St. Paul’s Church, the headquarters of the Art Ministry of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising—and the Predigerkirche.
Opening: Fri, Oct. 30, 26
