The Giessbach Falls at a glance
The Giessbach rises in the high valleys of the Faulhorn area and falls about 400 meters down 14 steps. At the waterfall is the Grandhotel Giessbach from the 19th century. It can be reached by the oldest tourist funicular in Europe. The waterfalls are accessible all year round and the boats operate from April to October.
What to experience
Loop to the falls (30-45 minutes)
From the Grandhotel Giessbach, a well-developed path leads along the Giessbach Falls. The highlight: A section of trail that takes you behind the waterfall. From there, you can look through the cascading masses of water to the turquoise lake and the surrounding mountains. The path climbs slightly and requires sturdy shoes.
- Good to know: Some spots can be slippery.
- Tip: After dark, the Giessbach Falls are effectively illuminated.
Ride on the historic funicular and Grandhotel Giessbach
Since 1879, the Giessbachbahn has connected the boat station on the lake with the Grandhotel Giessbach. The railway is considered the oldest funicular used by tourists in Europe and takes you back to the Belle Époque – the Grandhotel Giessbach with its terrace directly above the falls does the same.
- Good to know: The train runs from April to October.
- Tip: Combine the trip with a boat trip from Interlaken or Brienz.
Hike from Iseltwald to Giessbach (2–2.5 hours)
Start in Iseltwald and hike along Lake Brienz to the Giessbach. The path leads through forests and offers views of the turquoise water again and again. At the destination, the waterfall is waiting as a reward. The hike is mostly on well-marked paths with moderate gradients.
- Good to know: The path is not suitable for prams.
- Tip: Take the boat for the return trip to Interlaken or Brienz.
