Rheinfelden
Overview
Intro
Rheinfelden is particularly well-known thanks to the brick castle of the Feldschlösschen Brewery, which can be seen from afar, while the town itself boasts a beautiful old town on the banks of the Rhine.
Rheinfelden was the first Zähringer town on the left bank of the Rhine and the very first medieval town founded in the area of what is today the canton of Aargau. In the 19th century, rich salt deposits were discovered here, which led to the establishment of salt-water baths, thus laying the foundation for the town to become a spa resort. After the opening of the Basel-Brugg railway line, the town got another economic boost, and several factories were founded here. The Feldschlösschen Brewery was founded in 1876. The brick complex built in a castle style still shapes Rheinfelden today, as it is perfectly visible from both the motorway and from the train.
Next to it, the medieval old town rises from the industrial buildings, which include the now closed Salmen Brewery (later Cardinal). The semicircular old town is separated from the industrial part by the remains of the town wall and the two historic town gates. The town hall with its tower and the late-Gothic church create special accents in the otherwise uniform townscape. The view of the town from the Alte Rheinbrücke bridge is particularly beautiful. The old town nestles up against the Rhine and hardly gives you any idea that, behind the row of buildings, you will find a multitude of narrow and irregular, pretty alleyways. A striking feature of the town’s silhouette on the Rhine is the former Parkhotel, whose onion domes, in combination with the towers of the medieval town, add a special flair to the townscape.
ISOS
ISOS is the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites of national importance. The inventory is maintained by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC) and lists the most significant settlements in Switzerland. Today, some 1,200 places are included in the inventory, from hamlets right through to cities. The inventory provides information on the development and identity of the settlements listed in it, thereby contributing to the preservation of architectural diversity in Switzerland and promoting both sustainable planning and a high-quality Baukultur.
