Intro
This is a tour through magnificent scenery with views of the Emmental Valley, the hills of the Jura and the Bernese Alps, first climbing up to the popular Lüderenalp, then through forests and past marvellous Emmental farmhouses down to the valley and back to Sumiswald.
Description
The tour begins at the Grünen train station in Sumiswald or at Forum Sumiswald in the lower Emmental and passes the old Sumiswald castle. The section heading for Sänggeberg already has great views of the Emmental and the Bernese Alps. The route continues uphill to Lüderenalp, partly on the Alpine road (Alpstrasse), partly on the hiking trail. Situated on the border between Sumiswald and Langnau, Lüderenalp offers panoramic views of the Bernese Alps to the south and the Jura to the north. A health resort was opened here in 1890, specialising in whey fasting and tuberculosis patients, but in 1961 the building burned down. It was replaced with a hotel and restaurant and is popular with holiday guests and day visitors. Also known far and wide is the traditional Lüderen fest (“Chilbi”), which is held every August.
From here the trail keeps climbing to Rafrüti, the highest point of the tour. A very rocky and challenging path leads down to Tällihüttli and continues on rough terrain to Luegibänkli St. Oswald, an amazingly peaceful and quiet place. You can sign a guest register here. The next downhill passage requires some technical skill because it is steep and narrow. The trail passes a forest with a short bike trail and beautiful Emmental farmhouses. A paved road leads from Binzgrabe down to Heimisbach and a last short uphill section climbs to Steinweid with a picnic place and a biotope.
Along the slope of the hill the route continues to Trachselwald Castle, built in the 12th /13th century and perched high above Trachselwald village in the Emmental. Just before, the route branches off into the forest and after a downhill ride it comes to its destination at the Grünen train station. The lower part of Sumiswald consists of commercial buildings, but the centre of the village with its rectangular road system is of national importance. Especially Marktgasse with the late baroque shopkeeper buildings, impressive guest houses and residential structures surrounded by gardens is a remarkable street to see.
