Plaun Menisch Bike
Overview
Intro
Enjoying the quiet of the forest and the views over the Surselva region – it's all possible on this tour, which connects roads, forest and hiking trails around Disentis. The route crosses the streams of Val Segnas, Val Acletta and Val Clavaniev. Other gems on the way: a glockenspiel, an Alpine cheese dairy and the hamlet of Clavaniev.
Description
Disentis is characterized by the imposing Benedictine Abbey, founded around 700. This mountain-biking tour starts at the Acla da Fontauna stop of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (1,200 metres above sea level). From here, the trail gently climbs up to Segnas and on the paved forest road into the valley of the same name. At Plaun Menisch, the route crosses the winter descent of the Disentis cableways. This is also the tour's highest point at 1,600 metres above sea level.
In a series of long bends, the forest road winds its way down into the Val Acletta. After Pardi, the route follows the hiking trail to Crest dil Peter, where stunning views over the Surselva region await you. You can even see the high-rise buildings on Chur's westside in good weather. The following section on the hiking trail down to Crap Furau ends in the hamlet of Clavaniev (1,288 metres above sea level). On the way, you can visit the glockenspiel by the stream of Clavaniev and an old Alpine cheese dairy. The village with a conspicuously large number of barns lies sheltered on a southern slope. The upper-Grison-style farmhouses are another typical feature. The labyrinthine path through the village may not be obvious at first, but one can find the markings upon closer look.
The route continues in another wide loop in the forest to Fuortga ("gallows hill") and then uphill via Plaun Panazauns ("butter bales", 1,442 metres above sea level) back into the Val Clavaniev. Muntatsch offers another chance to enjoy spectacular views over the entire valley to conclude your tour. Passing the valley station of Disentis cableways at Sontga Catrina, the mountain-biking tour ends at the starting point at Acla da Fontauna.
