Intro
The trail climbs up to Del and then leads past the Riom Castle, home of the «Origen» Roman music theatre. Savognin is the stage destination. It offers its summer guests free cableway travel as well as a wide variety of experiences in nature.
Description
Tiefencastel’s historical significance goes back to its geographical location. The village is located at the confluence of the Albula and Gelgia (Julia) and on the north-south traffic axes - from Chur to the Julier or Septimer Pass - and west-east. The latter leads from the Schin Gorge to the Albula Pass and via Davos to the Flüela Pass then into the Engadine. The Rhaetian Railway on the Albula line also has a station in Tiefencastel. Shortly before Filisur, the train crosses the Landwasser Viaduct, which dips in a quarter circle directly into the tunnel of the next rock face. It is one of many engineering masterpieces on the Albula line and the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway.
Historically, the Septimer Pass is the most important Alpine crossing of the Via Sett. The third stage does not yet lead to the pass, but you have conquered the first steep step there as far as Savognin. You cross the Albula at the start. After passing the small village of Casti, the next crossing is the Gelgia. This flows into the Albula 200 meters further down.
There is now a climb of about an hour to Mon. The view of the mountain peaks of the Lenzer and Parpaner Rothorn is unique. You will also see a huge area of rubble in front of the mountains. This is a scree slope around 500 metres above the Brienz residential area. The village had to be evacuated for 52 days in May 2023 due to an impending rock fall. The mountain above Brienz has been in constant movement for over 100 years. Beneath the dolomite rock on the surface is slate from the Allgäu Formation and below it is flysch sedimentary rock. Parts of these rock layers form a slide that is slowly pushing the village into the valley.
You continue hiking uphill through sparse forest sections to the hamlet of Del. This is followed by an easy descent to Salouf and then an ascent to the Adont stream crossing. The Piz Arlos, Arblatsch and Forbesch compete for your attention visually. On gravel roads between pastures, you hike down into the valley to Riom. You will be enchanted by an attractive church in the heart of the village and Riom Castle, which is almost 800 years old. The theatre infrastructure was integrated into the listed structure as an independent “building within a building”, creating a unique backdrop for 220 spectators.
A few minutes later, you come across the attractive Lai Barnagn bathing lake. The water and the restaurant invite you to refresh yourself, and further exercise is on offer with the pump track, mini golf and slackline. Another 100 metres along the Gelgia stream, you reach the destination for this stage in Savognin. The village is located in the heart of Parc Ela, Switzerland’s largest nature park.
