Skiing to Italy and back
Overview
Intro
The “Matterhorn ski paradise” offers an apparently endless array of pistes on which skiiers can clock an astronomical number of metres in altitude. Skiers or snowboarders hungry for adventure can even take a diversion to Italy. The Zermatt region is the perfect place to undertake a long-distance ski tour.
The plateau above the Theodul Glacier is home to Europe’s highest upper station. From here, it is about 2,000 metres back down to the valley. Thankfully, the route down the mountainside is peppered with restaurants serving delicious food and providing weary guests with a place to rest and recharge their batteries. Skiing, snowboarding and winter hiking are possible throughout the year in Zermatt. In short, this ski region is up there with the best of them and it is worth staying for several days to discover all that it has to offer. We recommend a trip to the Breuil-Cervinia region in the Italian Val D’Aosta. This part of the Matterhorn region boasts 160 kilometres of pistes covering all degrees of difficulty. So if you are in search of a bit of Italianità, look no further than Zermatt.
