The region around Lugano boasts countless hikes ideal for enjoying the mild temperatures of the Ticino autumn. Take the time to visit a wine cellar and savour the regional cuisine in one of the many charming local restaurants.

Magliaso: Castagno Bike

This circular trail takes bike fans through the colourful Alto Malcantone region. The trail starts in the village of Magliaso, not far from Lugano. It passes through meadows, chestnut groves and birch woods. Between Arosio and Breno, a series of signs on the “Sentiero del Castagno” provide information about the chestnut forest and how the wood and chestnuts are processed.

Why not take a break in Maglio di Aranno to marvel at the traces of human ingenuity such as the hammer mill, or simply to admire the waterfall and the beauty of the surrounding area? The route follows the “Sentiero delle Meraviglie” as far as Ponte di Vello (Breno), where you can see further traces of the region’s industrious past including mines, ovens and old walls.

Malcantone: Golden hours on the Trail of Wonders

Malcantone is the area most typical of the Sottoceneri region. Nestled between deep blue lakes, crystal clear rivers and majestic mountains, this historic region is sure to evoke powerful emotions. A visit to the gold mine in Sessa is the perfect place to start. From here, the path meanders past golden autumn forests to picturesque Novaggio and the “Sentiero delle meraviglie” – the Trail of Wonders. Here you can steep yourself in history, with mills, castles, mines and a visit to the unique hammer mill.

Lugano: Visit the region’s wine cellars

The geographic location of Ticino and the area around Lugano provide the perfect conditions for growing exquisite wines that are enjoyed the world over. Merlot is the best known among Ticino wines, although many other top-quality wines are also grown in the region.

Tours of the region’s vineyards can be organised with the winegrowers on request. As well as learning about how wine is made, you’ll get the opportunity to sample the delicious wines produced on site and other local products.

Miglieglia: Casa Santo Stefano
