A chance to pause and reflect in wintry Valais A panoramic winter hike to the Buvette de Loutze and relaxation in the Bains de Saillon thermal baths.
Intro
When winter wraps Valais in a snowy white blanket, everything becomes quieter. The air is clear. Any noise is muffled. And there is a sense that time has somehow slowed down. The imposing 4,000-metre peaks, snow-covered slopes and brilliant sunshine offer the perfect backdrop – providing space to pause, reflect, and simply savour the moment. A winter’s day with a panoramic hike, a delightful break, and relaxing hours spent in the thermal baths.
Valais
In the south of Switzerland, Valais stretches out from the source of the Rhône and as far as Lake Geneva. Striking peaks and mighty glaciers characterise the landscape here, making the region a popular destination for nature enthusiasts as well as anyone seeking a bit of peace and quiet. In winter, over 500 kilometres of official winter hiking trails invite visitors to discover the region’s picturesque winter landscapes.
Setting out into the snowy landscape
For many people, winter in Valais means expansive ski resorts and sporting challenges. But the region has another side to it too: quieter, calmer, and reduced to the essentials. Winter hiking, mindful movement, and moments of relaxation. In this way, winter is not only experienced, but also felt. It’s less about achievement, and more about being present in the now – not forgetting the fresh mountain air, impressive views and restorative breaks.
Ovronnaz is a popular holiday resort in Valais, beautifully situated on a sunny terrace above the Rhône Valley. As visitors allow their gaze wander over the surrounding Valais Alps, they’ll discover peaks such as Mont-Fort, Pierre Avoi and the Grand Combin. This is an ideal place to come and relax, reflect, and enjoy the quieter side of winter.
A popular winter hike from Ovronnaz takes visitors to the Buvette de Loutze. The route runs gently uphill through the idyllic landscape; after around 2 hours and 15 minutes it leads to a cosy hut serving food and drink. The hiking trail is easily accessible and suitable for anyone who wants to experience nature at a leisurely pace. If you are looking for a more challenging experience, the route can also be taken on wearing snowshoes or as part of a ski tour.
The hiking trail begins by leading through a snow-covered forest. The landscape then opens up, and the route passes over open terrain, accompanied by views of the surrounding peaks. The route gets quieter with every step, until the only sound to be heard is the crunch of the snow under your feet. The clear air, the light and the stillness create an intense experience in the midst of nature.
Getting to Ovronnaz
The excellent public transport connections mean that visits to both the valleys and mountains of Valais can be effortlessly combined. From Visp or Martigny, trains run several times an hour to Riddes, and the bus can take guests from here to Ovronnaz. The starting point of the winter hike to the mountain hut is the Tourbillon car park or the “Ovronnaz, Chevaley” bus stop.
A break with panoramic views
One last turn, then the destination comes into view: high above the Rhône Valley, in the municipality of Chamoson, lies the Buvette de Loutze. Up here, there is no hustle and bustle, and nothing to distract you – just the mountains, endless sky, and peace and quiet.
The hut offers a cosy interior as well as a spacious terrace – and is open in both summer and winter. On the 300 or so sunny days a year, the outdoors becomes the perfect place to unwind, this is particularly the case at times when it is surrounded by a magical winter landscape.
A hearty platter featuring local Valais specialities, a hot cup of tea, and views of the surrounding beauty of nature: what more could anyone need for the perfect time out? The atmosphere here is relaxed, authentic and warm. The menu offers a selection of typically Swiss dishes, such as fondue and rösti. If they wish, guests can lie back on a sun lounger afterwards and treat themselves to a short nap in the sun.
Once fortified for the journey back again, we head down into the valley. A bit of exercise does your body good – and is both calming and invigorating at the same time. A quiet sense of anticipation grows for the final highlight of the day: the Bains de Saillon.
Winding down the day in the water
After having returned from the winter hike feeling satisfied, all that remains is a wish to bring the day to a gentle, relaxing close: with warm water, steam and perhaps even a soothing massage.
Les Bains de Saillon brings together thermal baths, a spa and a hotel, all under one roof. This establishment was extensively renovated and reopened at the end of 2022. It is a place that allows guests to truly relax and unwind, whether in the various indoor and outdoor pools, in the thermal river or while enjoying the sauna. And to round off the spa experience: various wellness treatments or a hammam session are also available.
While the cold mountain air remains noticeable outside, there is a soothing warmth available in the water. Steam rises from the baths, the guests feel their muscles relaxing, and the opportunity opens up to slowly unwind and reflect on the day. Time loses all meaning, and with each moment that passes, a greater sense of peace is found – for both body and mind.
The soft light of the setting sun makes the ambience in the baths feel particularly special. Even after dark, guests can continue to bathe outdoors until 9 p.m. A final deep breath in the warm water brings the day to a harmonious end.
Hotel Bains de Saillon
Going straight from the spa to a restful night’s sleep: after a day in the thermal baths, those who wish to do so can spend the night at the Hotel Bains de Saillon itself. Various room categories – ranging from Comfort to Deluxe – offer a combination of contemporary comforts and Alpine ambience. Direct access to the spa and the hotel’s quiet location in the Rhône Valley make it an ideal choice for a relaxing stay. There are several restaurants to choose from to round off the day with culinary delights.
Getting to Bains de Saillon
Guests can reach the entrance of Bains de Saillon directly by taking public transport to the “Saillon, les Bains” bus stop. A large, free car park is also available.
