Via Stockalper
Overview
Intro
The tour starts at the Stockalper Palace in Brig and leads you up to the Simplon Pass, which in former times was one of the most important crossings towards Italy. There are two ways to Gondo. Your journey ends with a night in the Stockalperturm.
On the trace of wine
The turmoil of the Thirty Years' War favoured the rise of the trader Kaspar Stockalper. Many magnificent buildings in his home at Valais bear witness to his wealth and can be seen on your hike along old mule trails to the south. Your tour starts at the Stockalper palace in Brig and takes you up to the Simplon Pass, which was one of the most important routes to Italy in earlier times. Though it is a comfortable path along the Diveria today, traders and smugglers struggled through it earlier via the Furggupass. Both trials are available to you and take you to Gondo where your journey ends with a night in Stockalperturm.
