Description
Tschiertschen sits on a high plateau on the southern side of the lower Schanfigg valley. Originally Rhaeto-Romanic, the settlement was later settled by Walsers. Amidst the dark wooden houses, the tower of Tschiertschen's Jakobus Church is clearly visible. From here, the view stretches far over the deep, wild valley that connects Chur with Arosa.
The relatively short hike to Chur begins in the village centre of Tschiertschen. Soon you reach a well-trodden path between lark forest and pastures with beautiful views of the valley. On the steeply sloping Sagatobel lies Praden, which is crossed on winding asphalt roads. The listed church dominates the village. It houses what is arguably the oldest church organ in the canton of Graubünden.
The trail soon branches off to the left from the mountain road and leads through the Steinbachtobel. A wide forest path winds along the steep slope to Ober Grida, where you'll have fantastic views of the town of Chur and the Calanda massif behind it.
Descending over the hillcrest, you reach Passugg. The village experienced a heyday when the Passugg healing springs were rediscovered as part of the "Alpine euphoria" at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Mineral baths, water therapy rooms and a drinking hall at the Passugg spa promised health benefits. Today, the small village is known for Passugger mineral water and the stately hotel management school.
The descent zigzags along a beautiful natural path down to the valley bottom, where the Rabiusa flows into the Plessur. Steep rock faces rise next to the mountain stream. The hike follows the Plessur to the end of the route. A narrow wooden footbridge leads across the river to the Bündner Kantonsschule (secondary school). From here, you continue to the car-free old town with its narrow, winding alleys.
Chur, the oldest city in Switzerland, had already been ruled by Celts, Romans, Ostrogoths and Franks. They all wanted to control the gateway to important trade routes and Alpine crossings. What remains are over 5,000 years of history. Two significant representations of St. James can still be seen today at Chur's Cathedral and on Martinskirchplatz.
