Luzerner Hinterland–Rigi
Overview
Intro
The peaceful Pfaffneren Valley is characterized by agriculture. A stamina-sapping up and down section follows, with wonderful views at Bellevue. Burgrain has a farming museum and the town of Willisau is known for sweet, hard Willisauer Ringli biscuits.
Description
The Pfaffneren flows through Pfaffnau. The stream, which is approximately 15 kilometres long, flows into the Aare near Rothrist. In all its serenity, the parish church of St. Vinzenz is attractive to look at. Anyone who approaches the village will be surprised by its size. It was built by the St. Urban monastery at the beginning of the 19th century. The former Cistercian monastery in the neighbouring village is impressive with its magnificent baroque buildings and parks.
With its strenuous ups and downs, you go through a hilly area that is dominated by agriculture. From the hamlet of «Bellevue», you can enjoy a picture-perfect view, as the name suggests. The journey down to Grossdietwil almost seems like a pass. But be careful not to just rush past the parish church. Otherwise, John the Baptist may veto it, for the mighty neo-Romanic building is dedicated to him after all. The bells sound bright and clear, and a masterpiece of a bell stands in front of the church on a white base. It resisted robbery by victorious troops in the Lucerne hinterland during the Second Villmerg War.
You should definitely resist the sight of the many posters on the streets and in the fields that you see along the way. Zell and Gettnau follow, and shortly afterwards, the Swiss Agricultural Museum Burgrain. Protected by the castle ruins and St. Blaise Chapel, it offers insight into Swiss farming (open Wed-Sun and on most public holidays). Also of interest: the Burgrain natural garden as well as a visit to Kastelen Castle and the St. Blasius chapel from the 17th century.
Together with the Wigger, which moves from south to north, whereas we go from north to south, this stage ends in Willisau. The town is attractive to look at with its medieval fortified buildings, the main street and the two gates, the upper and lower gates. The original home of the well-known Willisau Ringli is also located in the main street. But you cannot bite too hard; these things are so hard...
