This is Thun

Thun is located in western Switzerland on Lake Thun at the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. The city is a popular destination because of its location on the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Discover Thun 

Start the day with a walk through Thun’s old town. A little later, pay a visit to Thun Castle, which is located high above the city. Alternatively, enjoy the idyllic Schadaupark, built in the style of an English garden. A stop at the Aare will make you feel a bit like you’re in Venice. That’s because Thun is known for its many bridges. There is even more Mediterranean ambience on the shores of Lake Thun.

The medieval castle is the city’s landmark. It towers over Thun like something from a fairytale. Embark on a journey through 800 years of Thun, Bernese and Swiss history. Choose between different guided tours and trails to explore the castle. By the way, the castle towers offer a fantastic view of the city, lake and mountains.

Old Town of Thun

Not to be missed: a stroll through Thun’s old town. A popular subject for photographs: Obere Hauptgasse, famous for its elevated pavements. You will be amazed by the historic buildings and discover small, charming shops. After so much sightseeing you’ll need a break: Make sure to stop at one of the numerous cafés along the Aare.

The city’s location on the clear, blue Lake Thun means one thing is certain: a boat trip on the lake is a must when visiting Thun. During the summer months as well as between Christmas and New Year, the steam ship “Blümlisalp” plies the waters of the lake – an unforgettable experience. Other top excursion destinations around Thun: The mountain peaks of Niederhorn, Niesen, Stockhorn or the St. Beatus Caves.
