Wundermaschine, Méta-Kandinsky I
In this work, colorful circles and other irregular shapes are in motion. Some elements are fixed; others are brought into rotation by means of motor, wheels, and transmission belts. As they are arranged on different levels, shapes sometimes disappear behind others, only to reappear afterwards. Depending on transmission, some of the painted sheet metal pieces rotate faster than others. In Wundermaschine the mechanism itself is visible and, due to the colorfully painted drive wheels, becomes a component of the composition. Tinguely’s relief thus offers a fascinating spectacle of constantly changing color and shape configurations.
