Intro

Over the course of their careers, these artists have explored the technical and stylistic possibilities offered by this process, printing multiple works on wood, copper or linoleum.

Over the course of their careers, these artists explore the technical and stylistic possibilities offered by this process, printing multiple works on wood, copper or linoleum. Individually or in pairs, the artists travel regularly, discovering new places and potential subjects for their work. They are inspired by a variety of motifs from their daily lives, mainly shared between Geneva and the Valais, or gleaned from trips to the south of France, Brittany or Italy.

Stylistic tendencies and interests in common subjects are revealed within each couple: while the multiple works executed between 1911 and 1928 by Marguerite and Édouard Vallet-Gilliard are close to the naturalist movement, dominant in Switzerland at the time, the later productions of Valentine and William Métein-Gilliard, more rooted in the European avant-gardes, evoke certain more modernist tendencies. Through an original dialogue between a representative selection of multiple works by Marguerite Vallet-Gilliard, Édouard Vallet, Valentine Métein-Gilliard and William Métein, this focus proposes to contextualize the place occupied by engraving in each of their careers, and to explore the subjects and trends that inspired them.
