Intro

The Gelmerbahn offers you twelve minutes of thrills on rails. The steepest open funicular in Europe takes you up to the turquoise blue Gelmersee. Combine your train experience with a picnic or a hike.

The Gelmer Railway at a glance

One of the steepest funiculars in Europe: This is the Gelmer Railway with a maximum gradient of 106 percent. In twelve minutes, it takes you up to Lake Gelmer at 1860 metres. The open single-cabin lift is considered a marvel of technology. It is in operation from June to October and combines thrills with nature experience.

What you can experience

Ride on the Gelmerbahn (12 minutes)

Sit in the carriage of the steepest open funicular in Europe and climb 450 meters in altitude in just 900 meters. The moment when the train climbs almost vertically with a gradient of 106 percent is impressive. In the open track with your back to the mountain, you will experience the steepness directly – a highlight for the adventurous.

  • Good to know: It is best to book tickets online in advance – the train is booked up quickly.
  • Tip: Parking spaces are limited – it is better to travel by public transport.

Picnicking and hiking at Lake Gelmer

Discover the beauty of the turquoise blue Gelmersee right at the mountain station. The huge rock slabs by the lake are wonderful for picnics. In two hours you can hike either around the lake or up to the Gelmerhütte. For both hikes you need surefootedness – the paths are rocky and narrow in places.

  • Good to know: Wear sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing.
  • Tip: Take enough provisions with you – no catering facilities at Lake Gelmer.

Cross the Handeckfall Bridge (15 minutes)

Directly before the ride on the Gelmerbahn, an extra thrill awaits: At a height of 70 meters, you cross the Aare on a suspension rope bridge. You look out over the steep rock walls of the gorge and hear the sound of the Handeckfall below you. Like the Nepalese suspension bridges, the Handeckfur Bridge swings gently as you cross.

  • Good to know: The bridge is accessible free of charge and is also suitable for children.
  • Tip: Thanks to the bridge, you don't have to cross the pass road on the way to the Gelmerbahn.
