From peelers to Helvetica: In Switzerland's leading museum of design, you will encounter the objects and designs that shape your everyday life. You will discover changing exhibitions, attend guided tours and design in the studio yourself.
The Museum für Gestaltung Zürich – Museum of Design at a glance
The Museum für Gestaltung is the leading Swiss house for design and visual communication and has 3 locations in the city of Zurich: The main building on Ausstellungsstrasse, the Toni-Areal in Zurich-West and the Pavillon Le Corbusier. There are 7 to 9 exhibitions per year. The collection comprises over half a million objects.
What to experience
Discover design icons from everyday life (1–2 hours)
In the main building on Ausstellungsstrasse, you will meet celebrities such as the Swiss Army Knife, the Rex peeler and the Helvetica font. Around 80 posters from the large poster collection show you the range of Swiss graphic art. The Swiss Design Lounge promises relaxation, where you can take a seat on furniture classics.
- Good to know: Admission is free on Thursdays from 5 p.m.
- Tip: In summer, the summer bar opens in the garden on Ausstellungsstrasse.
Design your own in the open studio
Every Sunday you will experiment with materials and techniques in the open studio and implement your own ideas. The themes change often and refer to the exhibitions or the museum architecture. The offer is aimed at all age groups. Children from the age of 10 visit the studio alone.
- Good to know: You don't need to register for most open studios.
A look behind the scenes of the collection archive (1–2 hours)
In the Toni-Areal, a former yoghurt factory and today's campus of the art academy, the collection archive with over 500,000 objects is stored. It combines works from design, graphics, decorative arts and poster art under one roof. On a guided tour, you will take a look at many objects that would otherwise remain hidden.
- Good to know: The collection archive is only accessible as part of a guided tour.
