Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge
Overview
Intro
For over 100 years, Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge has delighted nature enthusiasts. On its way from the glacier to the valley, the Weissenbach River has cut a deep path in the chalk and slate rock face.
Rosenlauital bei Meiringen has everything you would expect from a fabulous mountain tableau: Alpine meadows, towering maple trees, stalls and Alpine huts aged black in the sun, craggy cliffs and sparkling glaciers. And in addition to all this, a glacier gorge that has delighted nature enthusiasts for over 100 years.
A safe path will take you past thundering waterfalls, romantic grottos and bizarre cliff formations in 45 minutes. The sky becomes a thin ribbon of blue and in certain spots the smoothly polished chalk walls crowd so close in that they form a tunnel. The water swirls in the pockmarked glacier, flows over a rocky ledge, pushes it way through a narrow strait, all the while frothing, bubbling and gurgling. The waters are powerful, breathtaking and refreshing.
The gorge is only visible after hiking up to it. The way down passes through an ancient mountain forest to the ticket office and Café Schluchthüttli.
Getting there: By train to Meiringen or Grindelwald, then take the PostBus to the Gletscherschlucht Rosenlaui stop.
