Intro
This hike is characterised by comfortable differences in altitude and offers a sweeping view of Switzerland's largest cow pasture, the Urnerboden. The route leads over scree-covered terrain. Along the way: the small glacier lake at the foot of the north face of the Clariden and the "Tyyfelsfriedhof" (devil’s cemetery) rock formation.
Description
The Klausen pass connects the cantons of Uri and Glarus. After the impressive postbus ride to the top of the pass, the tour starts right next to the kiosk. The beginning is also the steepest part of the hike. It heads between smaller boulders directly towards the mighty north face of the Clariden. If you keep quiet, you might hear the bells of the grazing sheep jingling. On the way, you pass several boulders. After a short zig-zag section over scree, the beautiful small glacier lake appears behind it, towards which you now continue.
The place near the lake is also known as the "devil’s cemetery". The name refers to a stone formation above the small Griessli lake. Two benches and several stones are ideal for a short break. The glacier is only fully visible from here, as the ice tongue is littered with stones and debris. After the somewhat steep and rough descent to the water catchment, a bridge about 20 metres long leads safely over the Fätschbach stream which rises at the watershed of the Linth and Reuss rivers below the Clariden. After the crossing, the path continues quite evenly over the Griessbödemli, always accompanied by an impressive view of the Jägerstöcke peaks on the other side of the valley.
About halfway between the lake and the Fiseten pass, fresh alpine products can be tasted at the Gemsfairen hut during the alpine season. After refreshments ordered there or from your rucksack, the trail continues without any major differences in altitude over stony meadows via Hasentritt to the top station of the Urnerboden-Fisetengrat cable car. The 600-metre difference in altitude to the Urnerboden can be comfortably covered by cable car. Did you know this? The Urnerboden is the largest cow pasture in Switzerland and was used as the main filming location for the SRF crime series "Wilder". Once in the valley, the postbus takes the hikers to either the Glarus or Uri regions.
