Dala Kultur Bike
Overview
Intro
Culturally and historically interesting beginner's tour from Leukerbad to Leuk/Susten. On part of the way, you follow the disused route of the electric rack railway from Leuk to Leukerbad. Along the way: a restored lime kiln, a historic section of the trail at the via ferrata near Varen, and the winegrowers‘ village of Varen.
Description
From Leukerbad, the trail leads out of the Dala valley across meadows and pastures, later through wooded areas. The massive rock arena is always in view. You continue partly straight ahead, then leisurely downhill to Inden. The path is always wide, clear and without major technical obstacles. Part of it follows the now disused 10.4-kilometre rack railway which connected the Rhone valley with Leukerbad between 1915 and 1967. As the track was partly laid on the road, the railway eventually became a traffic obstacle for cars and was replaced by buses.
The former lime kiln in the forest shortly after Inden is also disused. It is a witness to the importance of lime as a traditional building material. Below the village, another steep rock face - the Schattuflüe - has to be overcome on the impressive historical "Varnerleitern" trail section. For centuries, these ladder paths were the only way to conquer the over one hundred metre high rock sections. Today, two metal ladders are used as via ferratas.
Now the view widens as the Rhone valley reveals itself in its full width. Along an extensive dry slope, the somewhat narrower, enchanted trail gradually descends to Varen which is situated on the terrace of the Pfyn-Finges nature park. Above Varen, the view sweeps over terraced vineyards into the faraway lower Valais. The trail then takes you back to Leuk, and from there down to the Susten train station. This easy tour is also well-suited for children over the age of ten. In the opposite direction, it is suitable for e-bikes.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
