Intro
Short cross-country ski trail in the quiet part of Obersaxen. Behind the sleepy hamlet of St. Martin the route immediately begins to climb steeply. Powder snow and panorama are what counts here, on the way to the alpine settlement of Wasma: the views sweep across the plateau of Obersaxen, the Surselva district and the peaks on the other side.
Description
The small mountain village of St. Martin with a restaurant of the same name is located in the western part of the Obersaxen Mundaun municipality at the end of the panoramic road. You can’t miss the Catholic church of St. Martin as you approach the village. Follow the road in the direction of the church, which looks huge in between the surrounding Walser homes. The vicinity around St. Martin and Wasma is not connected to the ski area and therefore, quiet moments in the pristine outdoors are assured.
The tour begins immediately at the edge of the village. It crosses the snow-covered meadows and leads up in the direction of the alpine settlement of Wasma, which is the highest point of the trail. The vista sweeps across the plateau of Obersaxen and the Surselva district. On the other side of the valley you see the majestic Brigelser Hörner with Péz Tumpiv, Cavistrau Pign and Cavistrau Grond. West of Wasma is a wildlife protection zone, an important attribute that ensures a peaceful winter season for the wildlife.
Snowshoe hikers continue the tour in eastern direction, via Oberboda and down to Friggahüs. Despite the easy-going, leisurely descent, make sure you stop from time to time to admire the beautiful winter scenery. The scattered hamlets and villages you see are typical for the Obersaxen region.
