Intro

The route follows the Thur to its source on Mount Säntis, through the varied Toggenburg landscape, to the plains of the Thur Valley and the Zurich wine-growing region, where the Thur flows into the Rhine.

Description

Become acquainted with the various moods of the Thur on this riverside hike. In the upper Toggenburg, the river alternatingly shows its tamer and wilder sides. On the section from Wil to the lower Thur Valley, the trail follows, in a gentle descent, a mostly channelled river that bears witness to its diverse uses for irrigation. In the wine-growing region of canton Zurich, the Thur displays its typical meandering course as far as the renatured Thur wetlands by the Rhine.

As varied as the Thur itself are the landscapes it traverses. After the fascinating Toggenburg scenery flanked by the Churfirsten and Säntis mountains, the river reaches the hilly, agriculturally dominated landscapes of canton Thurgau. Sweeping vineyards on the lower reaches of the river highlight traditional wine cultivation.
