This is Saas-Almagell
The small Valais mountain village of Saas-Almagell is known for the Mattmark reservoir and the suspension bridges on Almagellerhorn. It lies in the Saas Valley in southern Switzerland, east of Zermatt.
Discover Saas-Almagell
Saas-Almagell lies at 1,672 metres, surrounded by the 4,000-metre peaks of the Valais Alps. In the village, old wooden granaries stand alongside traditional Valais houses. Above the village is the hamlet of Furggstalden, which you can reach by chairlift. From there, the adventure trail to Almagelleralp crosses 2 suspension bridges made of wood and steel cables. As you cross, you can feel the bridges swaying beneath your feet.
The Mattmark reservoir
At the end of the Saas Valley, the Mattmark reservoir lies at 2,197 metres, held back by Europe's largest earth-fill dam. Built from earth and rock, the dam is 117 metres high. In summer, the PostBus takes you from the village to the dam. From there, follow a centuries-old trail to the Monte Moro Pass on the Italian border. At the pass stands an almost 5-metre-high Madonna statue made of gilded bronze.
Winter on the sunny plateau
In winter, Furggstalden becomes a ski area. Its slopes cover a total of 12 kilometres and are particularly suitable for families. You can also take a toboggan and ride 3 kilometres back down to the village. Or enjoy a husky-drawn sled ride in the nearby hamlet of Zermeiggern, listening to the snow crunch beneath the runners.
Around Saas-Almagell
If you are interested in culture, visit the 19th-century Baroque round church in Saas-Balen. If you prefer nature, walk to the Fellbach waterfall in Saas-Balen, which plunges 40 metres. With children, take the gondola from Saas-Grund to the playground and mountain lake at Kreuzboden. For an even higher-altitude experience, take the Metro Alpin in Saas-Fee through a tunnel in the rock to the Fee Glacier.
