Intro

Discover the most visited historical monument in Switzerland: Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva. Immerse yourself in 1000 years of history, explore medieval dungeons and enjoy the magnificent view of the lake and the mountains.

Chillon Castle at a glance

The imposing moated castle has been enthroned on a rocky island on the shores of Lake Geneva near Montreux for almost 1000 years. The complex includes 25 buildings, three courtyards and underground vaults. Visitors marvel at 14th-century murals, magnificent halls and the dungeon immortalised by Lord Byron in "The Prisoner of Chillon".

What to experience

Time travel through 1000 years of history (1–2 hours)

Wander through 36 rooms of the permanent exhibition: From the Chapel of St. George to the Aula Magna to the Treasury and the keep. On 13 touchscreens you can see 8 short films about the story. Admire murals from the 14th century, parade halls and the original bedroom from the time of Bernese rule.

  • Good to know: Audio guides and guided tours are available in various languages.
  • Tip: Book a tour with wine tasting – the castle wine from their own vineyard is top.

Explore the legendary dungeons

Descend into the vaulted cellars where François Bonivard was once imprisoned from 1532-1536. These underground vaults inspired Lord Byron to write his famous poem "The Prisoner of Chillon". Feel the history within the centuries-old walls and discover how the castle served as a fortress and customs station.

  • Good to know: It can be chilly in the vaults – take a warm jacket with you.
  • Tip: You can also visit the military fortress "Fort de Chillon" opposite the castle.

View from the State Rooms

Enjoy the fantastic view over Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) to the Alps from the four magnificent knights' halls. The perfect location between the lake and steep mountains made Chillon strategically valuable. By the way, there is a small beach next to the castle – in warm weather you can cool off in the lake after the visit.

  • Good to know: Strollers cannot be taken on the visitor tour.
  • Tip: Walk along the riverside path – Montreux can be reached on foot in around 40 minutes.
