In 1915, the first international tennis tournament was held in Gstaad. Since then, many great names from the traditional sport have found their way to the Berner Oberland: including Stefan Edberg, Ilie Nastase, Tony Roche, Rod Laver, Boris Becker, Yannick Noah, Jim Courier, and Roger Federer, who was able to win the tournament in 2004. The record holder for the number of titles in Gstaad is the Australian Roy Emerson with five trophies.

The first edition of the tournament took place on the tennis courts near the Gstaad Palace. Later, the tournament moved to its current location in the center of the village. In 2015, Switzerland's oldest tournament celebrated its 100th anniversary.

In 2027, the EFG Swiss Open Gstaad will enter a new round.
