Toward the Summit and Through Time

Starting July 6, 2026, a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of the Monte Generoso Railway awaits you on the ground floor of the Fiore di Pietra.

We invite you to climb to the summit and be amazed by an engaging, interactive exhibition rich in historical artifacts, designed to showcase the charm of a railroad that has been carrying travelers, dreams, and wonder for over a century.

Through previously unpublished stories, images, historical documents, and original artifacts, you’ll discover the most significant milestones in the FMG’s history and learn about the figures who shaped its destiny, such as Carlo Pasta, the visionary and “genius of the Generoso,” and Gottlieb Duttweiler, founder of Migros and guardian of the FMG, who recognized its value and helped save it from being dismantled.

The exhibition also takes visitors on a journey through the evolution of tourism at the summit: from its beginnings, with the opening of the Hotel Bellavista in 1890, to the facilities that welcome guests to Monte Generoso today—the Fiore di Pietra and the Buffet Bellavista.

There’s also a look at the marketing and communication efforts that have made the railway a symbol of the region: vintage postcards, stamps, tickets, timetables, and historical promotional materials illustrate how the FMG has captured the hearts of entire generations.

And for those who appreciate the more technical aspects, the exhibition also devotes space to the railway line itself, the route from Capolago to the summit, and the evolution of the rolling stock—all testaments to a long history of ingenuity and passion.

A visit that enriches the Monte Generoso experience and offers a new way to experience the mountain: through its history, its key figures, and its extraordinary heritage.

The exhibition is free and open to the public during the operating hours of the railway and the “Fiore di pietra.”

Guided tours for groups and companies are available upon request.
