Painter of the silent sound

Painting is rarely as enigmatic and fascinating at the same time as that of the Dane Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864 Copenhagen - 1916 Copenhagen). Known as the "Vermeer of the North", he is best known for his interiors and cityscapes: deserted squares, rooms that lead to nowhere and light that palely penetrates into dim living spaces.
